The Boys

April 9th, 2010

I am so glad you came today…Today’s the day my friend, Hilary, of “The Other Mama,” hosts a weekly blogging party called Friday Favorites.  This is my 4th Friday Favorite post..so when you finish reading my blog, hop over to Hilary’s and take a gander of other people’s Friday Favorites.

Recently, I introduced the world to our newest member of our household.  Ginger is our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.  We adopted her from the Humane Society.. we volunteer there and we offered to watch her for a weekend… in a nutshell, we fell in love and decided to adopt her.  [To read Ginger's story click here.]

Today, I want to introduce you to “The Boys.”  I have two wonderfully BIG boys in my back yard.  They are as unique as Ginger in their own strange ways.  Domino is a black Lab.  There aren’t too many words to describe Domino.  He got his name by the single round white spot on his chest.  We adopted brought him from the ball park 4-5 years ago.  [actually our pastor's daughter called us to get him.. she lives  next door to the ball park.] He is a big baby and goes through life living up to the expression, “Ignorance is Bliss.”  There isn’t much between those ears of his.  But he is just the sweetest dog ever!

May I introduce to you the oldest four legged member of our family.  He is the other BIG boy in my back yard.  His name is Stuart.  He is deaf.  He is a Lab/Dalmatian  mix.  He has been with us for nearly 9 years.

And that my friends is about all you ever see of Stuart.  He is obsessed with digging holes.  I don’t think the word “hole” really describes what he digs… perhaps “tunnels” or “craters” may better describe his handiwork.  I joke with friends and neighbors that once he is gone to the big crater in the sky, it will be easier to connect the craters and make a small lake.  Luckily he digs in the same area.

Stuart has in the past dug up the sewer pipes, water pipes, phone wires, and a tree.  Yep, I said a tree.  Hard to believe it but he did… the root system has been left exposed.  Crazy!  I know!!  And when the tree died we had to cut it down thinking that it would fall on the dog..  I have nightmares when going on vacation… I’m afraid he might be digging and the hole collapse on him.

The best part about Stuart’s digging..my kids have been know to spend hours digging along side of him.  There is enough fresh dirt to make castles and roads for cars… The only danger is …well… we have never seen the Tonka Trucks again… they are buried somewhere in one of the collapsed craters.

I  have asked several vets their opinion to make him stop..and well nothing… and I mean nothing… has stopped the dog.  One vet suggested taking him on walks for socializing..nope didn’t work… only gave him more strength to go deeper.  One suggested a friend..therefore, Domino..nope didn’t work.  Pouring ammonia and bleach in the holes…nope didn’t stop him.. just killed the grass.  The funny thing is whenever it rains and the rainwater fills up or collapses his holes, the dog’s expression is panic.  Then he goes back to work digging.  At times, the craters have been big enough to bury my mini-van.    I have even thought about hiring him out to help the local water department dig water pipes up..or to local farmers needing a cattle pond.

To give you an idea of how deep the hole is…

I am going to share this with my family. We have a dog named Dash but I call him Harry Digger because he sheds so much and digs all over our yard during the spring and summer. Not so much in the winter.
Thanks for sharing this blog. I am going to be sure that Dash never gets word that he can dig that deep. We just have trenches all over our yard. I have always assumed that he was chasing moles cause we have a lot of them in our yard.

  6. You have GOT to be kidding me! I’ve never heard of a dog that digs that much!
I am familiar with dogs who don’t have much between the ears, though!
