Electric Savings!!

Oh, I tell you something is wrong with me!!  I get excited these days to get my electric bill.  Crazy isn’t it???  But, let me tell you I want to know how much I am saving!! I get a thrill seeing how much money our sacrifices are paying off.

Just the other day, our electric bill came.  Oh what a pleasant surprise.  This summer, we have bumped the old thermostat up to 80 instead of last year’s 78.  Plus, I am line drying my clothes, so the dryer isn’t being used except on rainy days.  Once the garage is cleaned out I am planning on having a line in there as well. Anyway, back to the bill.  My jaw dropped when I saw the savings…..comparing to last year’s June bill we have saved….. drum roll please…….$84.28!!!

Needless to say, I danced all the way into the house!!!

What Does God Say About Going Green?

A lot.

Seriously, if you google the question, “What does the Bible say about going green?”  You will be surprised on how many hits come up…. I really wasn’t surprised at all.  First of all, God told Adam and Eve to take care of his creations in the Garden of Eden.  Shouldn’t we view the Earth as our Garden of Eden?

Should we not want our great great great grandchildren to have a beautiful Earth to call home?  If any parent out there has seen the movie, “Wall-E”, we should have a reason to fear the doom of our planet.  For the next few months, I am going to make a valient effort to upcycle, recycle, and care for all of God’s Earthly creations.

Oh, and I believe the Bible says to give praises to God for all of His creations…..  I think going green is a form of praise.

Think of it this way, you buy your child a new toy.  It was expensive yet it is something he/she has wanted and begged for you to purchase.  Then, five hours later the toy is in the back yard covered in mud and left outside for the family canine to devour.  Wouldn’t you just want to scream????  Don’t you think that is how God feels when we are polluting, trashing, and disrespecting our planet???

Visit Your Public Library

You know the best place for someone to visit when you are living on a dime is your public library!  There is a world of freebies in that place.  Not only can you check out books instead of buying them, you can borrow movies, cake pans and even halloween costumes.  I’ve even seen fishing poles!!!

Our public library offers great classes, too!  You can learn to knit, to watercolor, to use the computer.  There are genelogical classes and book talks.  You can participate in coloring contests, writing classes and even story times with your children.  The library is a great place to visit!!!  And do you know what the cost is?????  NOTHING!!!!  LOVE IT!!

Cleaning Projects

Okay, I have been Nancy Drew for the past month or so….. I can already tell you that I have depleated my store bought cleaning supplies except for Windex and have began to introduce the “homemade” equivalents.  Oh, my, have my eyes been open!!

I have been cleaning with an all purpose cleaner for two weeks and really haven’t noticed any differences between the store bought except perhaps the store bought smell is stronger.  Other than that… my house is clean!!  I have been using vinegar to mop the floors and GREAT results have been happening!!  I have been using vinegar also in my dishwasher as a Jet Dry substitute.  No water spots!!  I’m sold!!

Today, I will have washed clothes in my homemade laundry detergent.  Ah, it takes one tablespoon per load!!  I start tonight using the dishwasher detergent I made this morning!!  Will let you know the results!!

Okay, now you want to know the cost difference.  For a box of laundry soap, dishwasher detergent, and all purpose cleaner, I would normally spend around $10.  I purchased a box of baking soda (BIG box), Borax, a jug of vinegar and oxy clean (couldn’t find washing soap) and paid approximately the same thing.  But, it takes less of the homemade products to do the laundry and dishwasher.  So you come out ahead using the homemade products.  I could drive my cost down if I could find washing soda instead of using oxy clean.  It costs about half.  And I still have a ton of the borax, baking soda and vinegar

I will continue to update you on the windex and oh, I am going to try to make my own carpet freshener!!  I know baking soda does the trick but I like the fragrances!

Going Homemade for Christmas

This year’s goal for our family is to have a good old fashioned homemade Christmas.  We gave the kids the challenge of making us our gifts.  Everyone is up to the challenge.  We have put on our thinking caps and have come up with several ideas.  Most of all we are looking for affordable good quality ideas.  Here’s what we have found:

Homemade scarves

If you knit or crochet, make scarves for the ones you love.  You can get one scarf from a skein of yarn.  You can spend $2.50 at Wal-Mart for a skein or you can spend up to $7-$9 at Michael’s.  If you don’t knit or crochet you can purchase fleece and go to www.stitchnsave.com/fleece/Fleece_Projects.asp for simple instructions for scarves and other fleece projects.  Either way, you will be wrapping family and friends in your love!

Websites with ideas

Go to www.mormonchic.com for a list of crafty ideas for gifts.  There are instructions for each project.  You can find candles, frames and a whole lot more!!
